Customer Review: greatly disappointed
I purchased this camera as a gift for my son a year ago. He has had little occasion to use it. He estimates it’s been used 4 times. Now as he attempts to use it over the holidays, the shutter won’t open and the lens won’t come forward as the camera is turned on. It is two weeks out of the manufacturer warranty. Of course, neither Amazon or Samsung wish to accept responsibility now that it’s out of warranty. They wish me to pay more to have a camera repaired that’s had very limited use. I certainly don’t wish to purchase any more Samsung products and must admit I’m very disappointed with Amazon’s response, considering how many items I’ve purchased through them.

OK camera, terrible customer support
The camera itself is OK, no complaints. However at some point it was damaged and sent to Samsung for repair. That turned out to be a naightmarish experience. I don’t recommend buying a Sumsung camera because if you ever need it serviced, you will have to deal with the most incompetent bureaucrocy that will loose your camera and will keep you on phone for hours inventing various excuses of why the camera is lost. For closest approximation of the Samsung customer service read Frantz Kafka’s “Trail”. The book will cost you less than the camera here on Amazon, but the impressions will be the same.

I migrated from a pretty extensive Nikon film system, and have used all kinds of other brands of film camera equipment, either on assignment or as a community college photo instructor during the 70’s and 80’s. I tried a variety of zooms, including varifocals with ELD glass. They were visibly softer than their equivalent single-focal-length counterparts. I noticed this after I had spent a long time using one particular varifocal. One day I switched back to a prime and when the prints came in, WOW! You could even tell with a casual glance at a 3X5 proof, that there was a huge difference. And the wide angle range in those 1970′5 and 80’s zooms alway seemed extra soft and distorted. So I just gave up on zooms until I experienced digital.

I’m not one of those people who photographs charts. But I’ve a LOT of experience looking at real world images. In fact, as long as the lens seems to be working I don’t really pay attention to it. However, in this case, I was shooting some photos of rocks along the Maine coast, from a tripod, and I decided to try to use a few Pentax prime lenses–a 40mm SMCP DA 2.8 and the Pentax FA 50mm 1.4–just to see if zooms had improved. All shots were in the 35-60 mm range, around f5.6-f8. When I uploaded these images into Photoshop, I was flabbergasted. The 16-45 mm gave nicer color and was at least as sharp as the two primes. Since then, I’ve had occasion to compare it against my Pentax DA 14mm 2.8, and I haven’t noticed any real-world difference at the wide range either. But it’s the fact that, if there were a difference, I would have to look really, really hard to see it that impresses me!

I find that I use the !6-45 more than any other lens that I own. I purchased it as an “upgrade” from the kit lens. And, as an aside, the Pentax K10D seems as if it were custom designed for migration from film or prosumer digital. The value for the money in this system is unmatched by any other maker. Amazon’s latest body price=$530 after rebate. Not bad for a camera with shake control, self cleaning ccd’s and the build-quality of a $1,500 Nikon.

I picked up the camera about 2.5 hours ago and already it’s doing the freezing other people mention. The sales person said I could easily take 600+ pictures before the battery died and it’s been less than 100. It’s really hard to figure out how to take a decent picture. It’s either way too bright and you can’t see anything or it’s way too dark and you can’t see anything.

Sorry but I couldn’t recommend this to anyone. I’m hoping to find a better camera when I return this one.

Customer Review: Amazing little camera!
I am involved in short-term mission trips through our church here in the Atlanta area. I used to have a big clunky Kodak digital camera but one month before my first mission trip to the Dominican Republic, I decided I needed to upgrade my camera so I could get some great pictures to document this special week in the life of my kids and me and not have to carry around that big camera.

I went to my local Wal-Mart and started looking at cameras. The Samsung Digimax S500 immediately caught my eye as it was pocket sized but still had a lot of nice features, more than I would need on a normal trip.

I took some time to go through the manual, learning all about the basic camera operations. The trip was a huge success! I bought a 2 Gig SD card and took so many pictures and video clips by the 4th day that I had to upload them to a laptop to make room for more!

Even after my second mission trip in as many years, the picture quality continues to blow me away for such a small, easy to operate point-and-shoot!

And the video capability…wow! My two children are in the high school marching band. I have taken numerous video clips of their performances for the past two years. The sound and image quality of the clips are great. It is nice not to have to carry around a video camera, as well now. The only thing you have to know is that if you zoom in while video taping, the sound stops until you let go of the zoom button…a small price to pay for such an awesome camera.

I rode my Harley from Atlanta to Canada and back…4900 miles last summer. The camera fit right into one of my windshield pouches.
